Calabria region travel information. Calabria, the toe of Italy's boot, is a much maligned region of Italy, but a great place for experienced travellers to discover. Basilicata region is to the north, and Calabria is surrounded by clean sea otherwise. The capital of Calabria is Catanzaro.

The Calabria region has been known for it's agricultural for centuries, vineyards and citrus fruit orchards in the lower regions, with chestnut and olives trees in the higher regions there are forests of oak, beech and pine trees, including a rare bosnian pine. One of the warmest regions in the Meditteranean with many unsploit areas and a wealth of history and culture just waiting to be explored.

Calabria is a land of strong and intense emotions; so are its flavours and world renowned Calabrian hot pepper can prove it. We can find it in most Calabrian typical dishes: from toasted bread with n’duja sausage or sardines, pork sausages, from pasta sauces to fish dishes. The Calabrian pasta is called Fusilli served with a variety of vegetables, fish and meats and is still made with traditional methods.

The strong flavour of hot pepper is contrasted by the sweet taste of Tropea red onion, Diamante in Calabria is famous for it's Pepperoncino and there are festivals held of every year in celebration.

Calabrian products and typical dishes are numerous. Extra-virgin olive oils, wines, a particularly well known strong wine is produced in the mountain town of Verbicaro, liquorice, citron and herbs, honey and jams the list goes on, with a mild climate and lots of sunshine this region of Italy can satisfy every taste bud.
